Based in America, the Ford Motor Company is presently the third largest automaker company in the world. Only Toyota and General Motors are ahead of this automobile manufacturing company. Henry Ford in a converted factory with just $28,000 cash in hand, started this multinational corporation on 16 June, 1903, with headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. There were some twelve investors who helped Henry Ford to build this dream company. Amongst them John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge were the most notable ones who later found their own company, Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company.

Beginning

Like many other great enterprises, Ford Motor Company's beginning was a modest one. Henry Ford's only dream was to make affordable cars for a global market. Initially, the production work was started with just a few employees who used to work day and night on each car from components made to order by other companies. The company began to name the newly manufactured cars using the first 19 letters of the alphabet.

In 1908, the first brand 'Model T' was born that was manufactured for almost 19 years with 15 million units sold. In 1925, Ford Motor Company acquired the Lincoln Motor Company, thus trying its hands on luxury cars, and during the 1930's, the company changed its focus towards mid-priced cars. Ford Motor Company is one of the few automobile companies in America that survived the Great Depression and it is also the largest family-controlled company till date.

100th Anniversary

Ford Motor Company Car celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 16, 2003. Today very few automobile companies are there that can be closely identified with the Ford Motor Company History and development of industry and society for many decades. Its global automotive brands include Mercury and Lincoln of the US, Jaguar, Volvo of Sweden; Land Rover and Jaguar of UK. Ford also shares one-third controlling power in Mazda. The other brands include Aston Martin and Ford.

Major Manufacturing Plants

The Ford Motor Company has major manufacturing operations in different countries of the world like Canada, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, the People's Republic of China, South Africa, Russia and India. Ford Motor Company in 1999 was ranked as one of the world's most profitable corporations, and the second largest automaker in the world. Since 2000, there was some loss in the market share in the US, but now it is back to its profitable status. In the 2007 Fortune 500 list that is calculated on the base of global revenues, Ford was placed at the seventh position. It also had more quality awards from J.D Power than any other automobile company.

Still today, some of the important concepts of Henry Ford is taken into consideration by people who want to do well in business like highly efficient factories, highly paid workers and low prices. His philosophies are popularly known as Fordism. Today after a century of hard work and labor, the company has began its second century journey of existence.
